Music has always held a special place in my heart, but it was not until I joined the school band that I discovered its true effect on my life. Through playing the piano, flute, and now the viola, I’ve experienced continual growth and discovery with my love of music. Additionally, the friendships I have formed and the unwavering support of my bandmates have become a big part of my life. My musical journey began with the piano at 6 years old. At such a young age, I found music frustrating and gave up quickly. When my younger brother began to play a few years later, I rediscovered my passion for music and took up lessons again. This time, I truly enjoyed the feeling of pressing down on the keys and hearing their beautiful sound. I loved creating new tunes and marveled at the many possibilities at my fingertips. As I grew older, I decided to expand my musical skills and eventually joined the school band playing the flute. This decision was one of the best I had ever made, as learning to play a new instrument opened up a whole new world of musical possibilities. I found a new sense of fulfillment in playicng the flute, and it quickly became my favorite instrument. Now as I am going into High School, I’ve decided to undertake the new challenge of learning the viola, and I am excited to continue developing my skills in this new instrument. Joining the 6th-grade band allowed me to pursue my musical interests and introduced me to a crowd of people who had a similar mindset as myself. I found my place of belonging, people who understood me, which changed my outlook on the other people who were in the band. I used to think of some of the kids in my band in a rather odd light, but by playing and creating music together, I made countless irreplaceable friendships. The band kids all have shared priceless experiences and we have tons of inside jokes. Together my bandmates and I have faced the hardships, mess-ups, and successes of rehearsals and performances, supporting each other every step of the way. In addition to the friendships I have formed, I have also had the opportunity to perform with a group of incredibly talented individuals. Being part of a musical ensemble has taught me the importance of teamwork and collaboration. I have learned how to listen to others, communicate effectively, and work together toward a common goal. In truth, I first struggled with being able to work with others in music but being in a band helped me realize that it takes a team of people working together for the feeling and heart to truly flow in a difficult piece. The feeling of unity that comes from performing music with a group of like-minded individuals is truly unparalleled. The sense of camaraderie that we share on stage is great, and it is a feeling that I will never forget, and will always want to be a part of. Playing piano, flute, and viola has allowed me to express myself creatively and has taught me valuable lessons in discipline, perseverance, and hard work. I have learned the importance of setting goals for myself and working hard to achieve them. I have learned the value of patience and dedication because mastering an instrument takes time and practice. I have learned through the years that I can’t just show up to band practice empty-handed having not practiced or rehearsed through the piece, but I need to put in the time and devotion in my after-school hours to make the time during school count. This will apply to my adult life because it shows me that I need to be prepared in advance, and not just hope for the best. Overall, the band has had a profound impact on my life. From helping me develop my musical talents to finding lifelong friendships and a supportive community that share my passion for music, the band has truly enriched my life in ways I never could have imagined. I am grateful every day for the opportunities and experiences that the band has provided me, and I look forward to continuing my musical journey for years to come.
