Ddrum makes electronic triggers used by drummers playing every style of music across the world on concert stages and in recording studios. What many drummers might not know is that Ddrum also builds some exceptional acoustic kits for entry and professional drummers. The Diablo Punx kit offers players of every level the chance to own a set that not only looks amazing but offers serious sound capability.
The first thing everyone notices about this set is how incredible it looks. If you’ve ever seen a bike built by the Orange County Choppers crew you have an idea of how the Diablo Punx looks. You can choose from 4 drum colors that have contrasting hardware colors on the sets; black w/ red hardware, red w/ black hardware, silver w/ blue hardware or white w/ blue hardware. The visual of this kit absolutely blows people away!
Looks aside, this set sounds terrific. The basswood shells deliver a punchy tone and plenty of volume making them a perfect choice for rock musicians. The Punx set-up is also geared towards rock players since it features only one mounted tom but two floor toms. Thunderous sound all around is complimented even more by the bass drum which has an oversized 20” depth. The tom is suspended off the tension screws of the top rim giving you ample adjustment options, and set-up freedom is enhanced further by the uni-ball joint that holds the tom arm. In many ways Ddrum has grown a very classic design to give today’s drummer the accessibility of old Slingerland and Rogers kits but the durability and sound demanded by modern players.
The snare sounds like a shotgun on rim shots and almost like a marching snare when played center head. I was not expecting the deeper tone it gave and immediately tuned it to the higher pitch I usually prefer. After playing the kit as a whole I found myself gradually decreasing tension on the snare heads because the higher pitch just didn’t gel with the enormous tone the rest of the kit has. I think the snare definitely sounded better with the richer, darker tone the lower pitch gave but appreciate the ease of effectively changing the entire sound of the drum. My only question with the set is the choice of coated single ply heads on the drums. While delivering staggering volume and classic 70’s tone, they aren’t as durable as I think they should be considering the player this set is designed to appeal to. It’s solely the opinion of the player, and head swaps are simple, but I’d have given Ddrum extra credit if they had included a set of hydraulic heads with the set should the player want extra strength and even more “boom for the buck”.
To go along with the stage-ready looks of the Diablo Punx, Ddrum has smartly included double braced hardware. This upgrade prevents minor problems that can disrupt performing drummers and adds years of longevity to the stands. Ddrum also includes a convertible straight/boom stand at no charge which is a real treat. This design has become very popular in after-market stand purchases by drummers, but you won’t have to spend any extra for one with this set.
This is a showstopper of a drum set. Ddrum has done a tremendous job of making a set that appeals to the eyes and ears of players without breaking their bank. Excellent hardware and construction make the Diablo Punx an outstanding choice for your next drum set.
